Here’s the final section from my youtube video “Tapping Arpeggios with Pachelbel’s Canon“. Along with more multi-finger tapping this example features a re-ocurring ‘hammer on from nowhere’ sprinkled throughout each measure on several different strings. This involves striking a fresh string in a ‘hammer on’ fashion which should ultimately produce volume equal to the tap and pull off notes. If this technique is new to you please proceed slowly, accurately, and steadily with the beat. And as usual, practice with a metronome. As you work through the example you’ll notice triad ‘shapes’ that each hand outlines. These shapes are the various chord inversions of each subsequent chord that is outlined (chord names are placed above there corresponding measures). Enjoy!

For this third section of Pachelbel’s Canon I suggest using the index and pinkie fingers to tap with, but feel free to use other combinations of fingers that might work better for you. Notice on the video demonstration @ 0:26-0:37 (Pachelbel’s Canon) that I use the first and fourth fingers on both hands to perform this single string section (the recommended fingering is notated under the tab). Always anchor the tapping hand thumb against the neck for support and accuracy. Tablature for this lesson is located below for downloading (see ‘ebook pdf’). Happy tapping!!

Tapping Arpeggios with Pachelbel’s Canon (part 2)

Here’s the guitar transcription from ‘Part 2′ of my youtube video “Pachelbel’s Canon tapping“. This eight measure tablature transcription is from 0:15 – 0:25 on the video. Here we’ll explore two octave arpeggios in the tapping style along with a little string skipping. Each measure outlines it’s respective chord with the exception of the last two notes which can be considered pick up notes for the following chord.

Strategy: master one measure at a time while using a metronome. Begin with the first four notes (three on the high E string and one on the D string) and set the metronome tempo slow enough to play triplets (the first and fourth notes will line up with the metronome click). This must be performed cleanly and without string noise. To help reduce inherent string noise try using a string-dampening device (hair tie) like the one I use in the video.

Next, master the seven consecutive notes on the D string with the metronome. And finally, work to connect the two sections smoothly. Continue this process for the entire exercise.
